QSI Corporation’s rugged mobile data terminal (MDT), the VTERM-G55, is now integrated with Pi Star’s PiMobileCADS and PiMobileRAMP product lines, which are used to service the para-transit and home health care industry. The VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal allows Pi Star to schedule client pick ups; monitor vehicle mileage, transit times, location and speed; and send and receive messages to and from the driver. Pi Star is able to communicate with the VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal via an external GPRS and CDMA modem.

The VTERM-G55 mobile data terminal used by Pi Star uses a graphic display and a keypad to interface with the user. The terminal can be equipped with two EIA-232, -422 or -485 serial ports and/or an Ethernet 10Base-T interface. The VTERM-G55 has a 320×240 pixel, color LCD display measuring 96 mm (3.8″) diagonal. (optional grayscale display available) and is viewable in most lighting conditions. Other features include 24-key or 40-key membrane / steel snap dome keypad with LEDs; 2 Mbytes flash / 16 Mbytes SDRAM; programmable speaker and real-time clock. The VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal is ruggedized to withstand the shock, vibration, temperature and humidity environmental extremes common in many vehicle-related applications today.

Electric lift chairs have gone a long way since their humble beginnings. Many elderly and disabled have great difficulty getting up after being seated for an extended period of time, and electric liftchairs were designed to aide the user in standing up. At the beginning, electric liftchairs were no more than modified recliners, lacking both features and safety. Nowadays, electric power chairs can come with everything short of the kitchen sink.

Lift chairs began to take root in the early 80’s, as people were looking to give their elderly parents more freedom and mobility around the house. Simply put, many families installed lift systems onto their living room recliners. The result was a “lift chair” that wasn’t reliable - the frames and upholstery were never designed to be lifted and raised constantly, thus causing the frame of the chair to break frequently. As if that wasn’t dangerous enough, the earliest lift systems were spring based. Unlike the systems we use today, spring based systems simply lifted and lowered with the press of a button. Thus, if one accidentally pressed the button they could be thrown off their seat!

The lack of quality liftchairs could directly be attributed to the lack of dedicated power chair companies. This changed as soon as Pride Mobility and Golden Technologies started making lift chairs. In the late 80’s, these two companies took electric lift chairs to the next level: they began by building the chairs from the ground up. That meant better construction and better quality parts, resulting in a product that was designed to be lifted in the air constantly. They also removed the spring lift and replaced it with electric motors; thus, the liftchair would only raise and lower when the button was pressed, greatly improving safety.

While there are many different companies that make electric power chairs, Pride Mobility and Golden Technology have been around the longest and have the best reputation. When these two companies came to fruition in the 80’s, many of the old style lift chair manufacturers were simply not able to compete with the vastly superior product and went out of business. These days, both companies have expanded and offer a wide array of products, including electric wheelchairs, scooters, and lift ramps. However, electric lift chairs have been, and always will be, their bread and butter.

NMEDA is a non-profit trade association of mobility equipment dealers, driver rehabilitation specialists, and other professionals dedicated to broadening the opportunities for people with disabilities to drive or be transported in vehicles modified with mobility equipment. All members work together to improve transportation options of people with disabilities.

Formed originally as an association of mobility equipment dealers in the state of Florida, membership opened on a national level in 1989 and the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association was established. The organization promotes and supports individual members engaged in the modification of quality transportation for people with disabilities. Membership has grown to over 650 members with the bulk of the membership located in the United States and Canada.

NMEDA members adhere to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and follow the NMEDA Guidelines. NMEDA members update the Guidelines, a living document providing detailed recommended practices on equipment installation and modifications, yearly. Every NMEDA member agrees to follow these Guidelines when they join the association.

The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) is a nationally recognized accreditation program for the mobility equipment industry. The program promotes quality, safety, and reliability within the industry. Some states now require a dealerÂÂ’s participation in the QAP to perform work for the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs. The QAP is the only program of this nature developed for the mobility equipment industry. A QAP designation enhances vehicle modification and mobility equipment installation in a manner consistent with the highest guidelines available in the industry. The states that have adapted the program include South Carolina, Ohio, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York.

Kentucky is pending. Louisiana and North Carolina require QAP or an equivalent.

Do you want to get out of the house? Do you want to enjoy your freedom again? Do you crave the open air? Do you want to be able to live on your own terms? Power chairs give you the mobility and independence you’ve been looking for.

If you are looking to regain your independence, then a power chair is the right option for you! A power chair is an electric wheelchair, but it is designed to be distinctly different than simply a wheelchair with a battery and motor. A power chair has a base with a plastic housing and the chair is more like a captain’s chair than the typical chair you see on a wheel chair. While electric wheelchairs look like traditional wheelchairs with a battery attached, a power chair is designed to be sleeker looking. It is slightly taller but like a traditional wheelchair, it is steered by a joystick in the armrest.

Power chairs come in either front wheel drive (which is the most common) and rear wheel drive. Almost all wheelchairs come with 6 wheels but power chairs have a slight difference in the configuration. Traditional wheelchairs have smaller wheels in front, larger wheels in the back (that you can move with your arms) and a pair of very small wheels at the rear to help avoid mishaps where the user accidentally tips backward.

This configuration is not necessary on a power chair since the design reduces the risk of back tipping. Power chairs still have 6 wheels, but the larger set are up front and there is another sent at the very front of the device so that you can get over a curb.

Here’s how it works: When you approach a curb, slow down as you get nearer. When the very front wheels (the “curb ascenders”) touch the curb, accelerate your power chair and the curb ascenders will lift the chair up the curb so that the large front wheels can grip the top of the curb. Then accelerate again, slowing down to let the back wheels climb at a slower pace (to avoid an uncomfortable bump).

In the early days of your power chair ownership, you’ll quickly discover that although the power chair can climb some curbs and steps, it can also get stuck because the clearance on the chair is fairly low. In those early days, you may want to bring a cane with you so you can push yourself off of the curb if you do get stuck on it.

Power chairs are the next generation wheelchair in that they combine the mobility and turning radius of a wheelchair, but they do it with style and power and improved design and comfort, too. If you want your independence and mobility back, a power chair is the way to go. Try out different kinds and find the one you like best!
